Resumo A coleta de afluentes e o manejo de águas pluviais são canalizadas em sistemas distintos, não devendo haver comunicação entre si, pois quando isto acontece é comum identificar alterações nos indicadores de qualidade dos efluentes nas estações de tratamento de esgotos. Deste modo, objetiva-se quantificar as alterações causadas pela chuva no tratamento de esgoto sanitário, os quais utilizam o sistema de lodo ativado. Para uma ETE, localizada no município de Paulista, PE, com capacidade de 400 L s-1, utilizando sistemas de lodos ativados, foram analisadas as alterações, na entrada e na saída do sistema para os: pH, temperatura, DBO e eficiência de tratamento, além da vazão de entrada, entre dias considerados secos e chuvosos. Foi constatado que o volume de entrada é incrementado em média de 25% da vazão de projeto de dimensionamento da estação. Com isto, alguns controles operacionais relevantes foram identificados, como a paralização temporária de estações elevatórias de esgoto, visando manter o pleno funcionamento do sistema, evitando sua sobrecarga. O pH sofre leve aumento na alcalinidade, cerca de 0,3, mas sem interferir no processo de tratamento. Já a temperatura do afluente em dias chuvosos sofre redução de 3 a 5K, dependendo do evento. Utilizando os testes T e Z, foi possível identificar que não houve alterações significativas (uneq. var. t: 1.18 > 0.26 e uneq var. z: 0.71 > 0.48, respectivamente) nas concentrações de DBO, tanto no efluente quanto no afluente, e a eficiência de remoção de carga orgânica foi mantida, ao contrário do que se espera em outros tipos de tratamento mais simples.

Abstract Effluent collection and stormwater management make use of different drainage systems, which should remain unconnected with one another. If stormwater drains into sewage collection systems, it often causes changes in effluent quality indicators at sewage treatment plants. This study sought to quantify the changes caused by rain in a Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) located in Paulista, PE, which uses the activated sludge system. Accordingly, changes in pH, temperature, BOD, and treatment efficiency at the inlet and outlet, as well as inlet flow were analyzed on dry and rainy days at the plant, which has a sewage capacity of 400 L s-1. The input volume was found to be greater than the design flow of the station, about 25%. With this, some relevant operational controls were identified, such as temporarily shutting down sewage pumping stations in order to maintain full operation of the system and avoid overload. The pH increases slightly in alkalinity, about 0.3, but this does not interfere with the treatment process. The temperature of the influent on rainy days is about 3 to 5 degrees cooler, depending on the intensity of the event. Using the T and Z tests, it was possible to identify that BOD concentrations in the influent and the effluent were not significantly different (uneq. var. t: 1.18 > 0.26 and uneq var. z: 0.71 > 0.48, respectively), and the organic load removal efficiency was maintained, contrary to what is expected with other, more simple types of treatment.

Resumo A busca por melhores condições de vida tem levado os moradores da região semiárida brasileira a optarem por plantar culturas forrageiras, provocando a diminuição gradativa da vegetação nativa (Caatinga) desta região. A substituição da Caatinga pela palma, por exemplo, tem efeito pouco estudado, sobretudo no tocante as propriedades físico-hídricas do solo. O objetivo deste estudo foi comparar as características físico-hídricas de um Neossolo Litólico em duas áreas com diferentes condições de cobertura vegetal: uma cultivada com Palma forrageira (O. ficus-indica) e a outra com Caatinga. Observou-se que as diferenças na estrutura do solo, especialmente na porosidade, entre o solo natural e cultivado, controlam os processos hidrodinâmicos, resultando em alterações nas curvas de retenção de água no solo e de condutividade hidráulica. O solo natural apresentou uma baixa condutividade hidráulica, quando comparada a determinada para o solo cultivado. Esse aumento deve-se provavelmente ao manejo do solo, necessários para o cultivo da palma forrageira. A estrutura do solo natural, caracterizada por valores relativamente baixos de condutividade hidráulica saturada, apresentam uma infiltrabilidade que favorece o escoamento superficial. A antropização do solo na área em estudo promoveu alterações nos atributos físicos dos solos, diminuindo a densidade e aumentando a porosidade. Consequentemente há o aumento da infiltração de água no solo e a redução do escoamento superficial no solo cultivado, corroborando com resultados obtidos em estudos anteriores.

Abstract The search for better living conditions has led the residents of the Brazilian semi-arid region to plant forage crops, leading to a gradual decrease in the native vegetation (Caatinga) of this region. The effects caused by the replacement of Caatinga with palm, for example, have been little studied, especially with regard to the physical and hydraulic properties of the soil. The objective of this study was to compare the physical-hydraulic characteristics of a litholic neosol in two areas having different vegetation cover: one area cultivated with forage palm (O. ficus-indica) and the other covered by native Caatinga. Differences in soil structure, especially in porosity, between the natural and cultivated soils were observed to control the hydrodynamic processes, resulting in changes in water retention curves and hydraulic conductivity. Natural soil presents low values of hydraulic conductivity when compared to those of cultivated soil. This increase is probably due to soil management required for forage palm cultivation. The natural soil structure, characterized by relatively low saturated hydraulic conductivity values, presents an infiltrability that favors surface runoff. Human activities in the study area have promoted changes in the soil’s physical attributes, decreasing density and increasing porosity. Consequently, there is an increase in water infiltration into the soil and a reduction of runoff in cultivated areas, confirming results obtained in previous studies.

Resumo A construção de subestações de energia elétrica representa um grande número de riscos devido ao seu ambiente periculoso. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a percepção dos trabalhadores da construção civil sobre os riscos, os métodos que utilizam para avaliação e o gerenciamento dos riscos a que estão expostos. Este estudo realizou uma analise qualitativa e quantitativa durante a expansão de uma subestação de energia elétrica, adicionando um transformador de potência de 100 MVA. Os riscos foram identificados e analisados utilizando a Análise de Risco Preliminar (APR). Além disso, um questionário sobre segurança na construção foi criado e aplicado em todos os 27 trabalhadores que participaram da construção. Os resultados mostraram quais atividades estão presentes durante a construção de uma subestação de energia, que os riscos envolvem e como gerenciá-los. Verificou-se que entre várias, as APR e Checklists eram as ferramentas de análise mais utilizadas. Mais adiante, foi encontrada uma relação entre treinamento e percepção de risco. Entre os riscos percebidos estavam: ruído, trabalho em alturas, choques elétricos, acidentes de trânsito, animais peçonhentos, poeira, incêndio e explosões. A conclusão deste estudo foi que a construção de subestações de energia elétrica traz diversos riscos de segurança e que a instrução dos trabalhadores permite um gerenciamento eficaz dos riscos, podendo diminuir o número de acidentes nesse tipo de obra.

Abstract The construction of electric power substations poses a great number of risks due to its dangerous environment. The objective of this work was to evaluate the perception of construction workers on risks, methods they use for evaluation and managing risks to which they are exposed. This study carried out a qualitative and quantitative analysis during the expansion of one electric substation, adding an additional 100 MVA power transformer. The risks were identified and analysed by using the Preliminary Risk Analysis (PRA). Additionally, a questionnaire on construction safety was created and applied on all 27 workers which participated in the construction. The results showed which activities are present during the construction of a power substation, which risks are involved and how to manage them. It was found that among several, the PRA and Checklists were the most commonly used analysis tools. Further on, it was found a relation between training and risk perception. Among perceived risks were: noise, working at heights, electric shocks, traffic accidents, poisonous animals, dust, fire and explosions. The conclusion of this study was that the construction of electric power substations brings several safety risks and that the instruction of workers allows an effective risk management, and can reduce the number of accidents in this type of working activity.

Resumo A urbanização está diretamente ligada ao processo de impermeabilização do solo em áreas urbanas que acaba contribuindo no surgimento dos riscos de alagamentos. Desse modo, objetivou-se nessa pesquisa determinar as propriedades hidrodinâmicas das praças púbicas de uma cidade Brasileira e com isso determinar o quanto podem contribuir para a redução de alagamentos. Para tanto foram utilizado o método Beerkan para determinar as propriedades hidrodinâmicas do solo em nove praças localizadas em pontos críticos de alagamentos na cidade do Recife. O método utiliza ensaios de infiltração de anel simples e coletas de amostras de solos para obter a distribuição granulométrica do solo, com isso, gerar a curva de retenção da água no solo θ(h) e a condutividade hidráulica K(θ) através dos modelos de Van Genuchten (1980) e de Brooks e Corey. As praças estudadas apresentam características parecidas, uma vez que possuem classes texturais próximas sendo elas Areia Franca e Franco Arenosos. O que fez com que das nove praças estudadas, oito apresentassem aptidão para contribuir de maneira positiva na redução dos riscos de alagamentos, através da sua adaptação em microbacias de infiltração para que posam receber os escoamentos superficiais que sobrecarregam as estruturas de drenagem.

Abstract Urbanization is directly linked to the process of impermeabilization of the soil in urban areas that contributes to the emergence of flood risks. The purpose of this study was to determine the hydrodynamic properties of the public squares in a flood-prone Brazilian city and determine to what extent they could contribute to the reduction of flooding. The Beerkan method was used to determine the hydrodynamic properties of the soil in nine squares located at critical flooding points in the city of Recife. This method uses simple ring infiltration and the collection of soil samples to obtain the soil granulometric distribution, thereby generating the soil water retention curve θ(h) and the hydraulic conductivity K(θ). The squares studied have similar hydrodynamic characteristics because of their similar soil texture classes, such as Loamy Sand and Sandy Loam. This made it possible for eight of the nine squares studied to be able to contribute positively to the reduction of flood risks by adapting them into micro infiltration basins that can receive the surface flows that overload the drainage network.

Abstract Paper aims To study fall-accident cases in order to analyze the commonly missing or not adequately applied risk management measures (RMM) and its consequences depending on falling height. Originality First study to analyze failed RMM for preventing falls from height. Research method The study reviewed court cases published by the journal “Safety & Health Practitioner”. NIOSH recommendations were used to define RMM to apply to this study. Main findings Finally, in 98% of analyzed cases, the fall from height was a result of several non-adequate or missing RMM: in 81.6% procedures of work, 65.8% guardrails and edge protection, 60.5% risk assessment, and 60.5% platforms or scaffolds. It can be concluded that falls from height pose a significant risk for workers, which could be prevented by adequately apply RMM. Implications for theory and practice The focus in the prevention of falls should be given on most common RMM.

Resumo O processo de urbanização interfere nos elementos do ciclo hidrológico, alterando as características de infiltração, escoamento e evaporação da água oriunda da chuva. Para analisar este ciclo hidrológico há diversos métodos e ensaios que visam caracterizar hidrodinamicamente o solo de uma localidade. Entretanto, a realização de coletas e ensaios de campo são onerosos e morosos. Por conta destes altos custos, é importante buscar métodos que visem economizar tempo e dinheiro. Uma das maneiras, é realizar simulações do fluxo de água no solo, mediante o uso de modelos computacionais como o Hydrus 1-D, afim de explicar o balanço hídrico de uma região. Os resultados dessas simulações apontaram que dos 385.02 mm que precipitaram 355.18 mm infiltraram, mostrando que o solo da região possui uma grande capacidade de infiltração, o qual é composto majoritariamente por areia, entretanto, dos 228000 m2 estudados apenas 38760 m2 são de solo não pavimentado. Estes resultados mostram que o solo do local estudado seria capaz de infiltrar a água pluvial sem gerar alagamentos, caso não houvesse apenas 17% de solo não impermeabilizado. Além disso, esta conclusão pode ser extrapolada para as áreas que circundam este bairro e também para grandes centros urbanos, uma vez que eles possuem características semelhantes.

Abstract The process of urbanization interferes in the elements of the hydrological cycle, altering the infiltration, flow, and evaporation of rainwater. Several methods and tests exist for analyzing this hydrological cycle that aim to hydrodynamically characterize the soil of a locality. However, the collection and field trials can be expensive and time consuming. Because of these high costs, it is important to look for methods that save time and money. One such method is to perform simulations of water flow in the soil, using computational models such as Hydrus 1-D, in order to explain the water balance of a region. The results of these simulations showed that 355.18 mm.m-2 of the total 385.02 mm.m-2 of precipitation was able to infiltrate, indicating that the soil of the region has a high infiltration capacity, due to its high sand content. However, of the 228,000 m2 studied, only 38,760 m2 are unpaved soil. This shows that the soil at the location studied would be able to infiltrate most rainwater without the occurrence of flooding, if more than only 17% of the land area were permeable soil. This conclusion can be extrapolated to other areas surrounding this neighborhood and to other large urban centers, which have similar characteristics.

RESUMO Nas regiões semi-áridas, as altas taxas de evaporação interferem na disponibilidade de água no solo. Normalmente, é difícil medir e modelar a evaporação devido à complexidade dos métodos disponíveis, ao baixo teor de umidade do solo e à baixa concentração de vapor de água no ar. Isso também pode dificultar o monitoramento e a simulação da evapotranspiração nessas regiões. Assim, o método da Câmara Portátil (CP) é utilizado para medir diretamente a evaporação e a evapotranspiração em tempo real e em curtos intervalos de tempo, dando uma estimativa mais detalhada desses processos. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a evaporação através da transferência de massa no solo numa barragem subterrânea sob diferentes profundidades e condições do lençol freático do ambiente semiárido do Estado de Pernambuco, nordeste do Brasil, através dos valores preditos pelo modelo SiSPAT e medidos pelo método de câmara portátil. Para o propósito da modelagem e também para conhecer melhor o comportamento do solo, as propriedades hidráulicas do solo foram determinadas pelo método de Beerkan. O método da Câmara Portátil apresentou resultados consistentes com o potencial de evaporação do solo nu no semiárido pernambucano/ Nordeste do Brasil, atingindo cerca de 1.800 mm por ano. O modelo SiSPAT foi bastante satisfatório para a simulação da evaporação do solo em diferentes condições da profundidade do lençol freático. Os valores encontrados para a evaporação do solo com a simulação do método SiSPAT e da Câmara Portátil (CP) diferiram em 1,43% e 4,44% para os casos em que o lençol freático estava em 0,20 e 1,20m de profundidade, respectivamente.

ABSTRACT In semi-arid regions, there is a high evaporation, which leads to soil dryness, interfering in the availability of water in the soil. Usually it is difficult to measure and model the evaporation due to the complexity of the available methods, the low soil water content and the low concentration of water vapor in the air. This can also make it difficult to monitor and simulate the evapotranspiration in these regions. Thus, the Portable Chamber method is used to directly measure evaporation and evapotranspiration, because this technique allows real time estimation and in short time intervals, giving a more detailed estimation of those processes. The objective of this study was to evaluate the evaporation through the mass transfer in the soil in an underground dam under different water table depths and conditions of the semi-arid environment of Pernambuco State in Brazil, through the values predicted by the SiSPAT model and measured by the portable chamber method. For the purposing of modeling and also to better know the soil behavior, soil hydraulic properties were determined though the Beerkan method. The portable chamber method was applied for one of the first times in a semi-arid region of Northeastern Brazil, and it was consistent with the potential evaporation of bare soil, reaching about 1,800 mm per year. The SiSPAT model was quite satisfactory for simulation of soil evaporation in different conditions of the water table depth. The values found for soil evaporation with the simulation of the SiSPAT and the Portable Chamber (PC) method differed in 1.43% and 4.44% for cases where the water table was at 0.20 and 1.20m of depth, respectively.

ABSTRACT The CO2 emission from the soil surface, commonly referred to as soil CO2 efflux (ECO2) or soil respiration, is the sum of processes that include root respiration and microbial activity. Measuring this evolution is important to establish sustainable land use models and to estimate global fluxes of carbon, which affect climate change. Despite its importance, few measurements have been made in areas of the semiarid Brazilian Northeast region, and most of them were made using the alkali absorption method (AA), which can underestimate ECO2. Measurements using AA were compared to measurements using the infrared gas analyzer method (IRGA) over ten months (in rainy and dry seasons), during the day and night, in areas of Caatinga (xeric shrubland and thorn forest) and pasture in the Agreste region of the state of Pernambuco. The ECO2 measurements from AA varied little from night to day and throughout the year or in the rainy and dry seasons. However, those obtained from IRGA were higher in the rainy than in the dry season, but also without significant differences from day to night. The values of both methods were similar in the dry season, but in the rainy season they were higher with the IRGA. Therefore, AA seems to have little sensitivity to seasonal variations, in contrast with measurements from the IRGA, and it may underestimate soil ECO2 when it attains higher values. This result indicates that some of the soil ECO2 values determined in areas of the Brazilian semiarid region, and consequently annual C losses, may have been underestimated.

Resumo A temperatura é um fator de fundamental importância para o entendimento dos processos físicos, químicos e biológicos que ocorrem no solo. Entretanto, existem poucos estudos na zona semiárida brasileira que buscam compreender como a degradação dos solos afetam as suas características térmicas. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a influência das técnicas de cultivo na caracterização térmica de um solo, utilizando o modelo proposto por Johansen. O estudo foi conduzido em duas parcelas, uma com 2,0 hectare de solo com mata nativa (Caatinga) e a outra com 4,5 hectare de solo cultivado com Palma Forrageira (O. ficus-indica), no Município de São Bento do Una - PE, na mesorregião do Agreste Meridional do estado de Pernambuco. Observou-se que os procedimentos utilizados no preparo para o cultivo da Palma Forrageira ocasionaram uma diminuição na capacidade de transmissão da temperatura superficial para o interior do solo. As mudanças nas propriedades físicas do solo, necessárias para o cultivo ocasionaram em uma redução no valor médio da capacidade térmica volumétrica do solo em cerca de 22%; um aumento de aproximadamente 5% na média da capacidade térmica volumétrica e um aumento de 26% na difusividade térmica do solo, além de uma redução de aproximadamente 50% no fluxo de calor no solo a partir da superfície.

Abstract Temperature is a fundamentally important factor for understanding the physical, chemical, and biological processes that occur in soil. However, there are few studies in the Brazilian semiarid zone that seek to understand how soil degradation affects its thermal characteristics. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of cultivation techniques on the thermal characterization of soil, using the model proposed by Johansen. The study was conducted in the Agreste region of the state of Pernambuco, Brazil on two plots of land, one with native vegetation (Caatinga) and the other with spineless cactus (O. ficus - indica). It was observed that the procedures used to prepare the soil for cultivation of spineless cactus caused a reduction in the capacity to transmit the surface temperature to the interior of the soil. Changes in the physical properties of the soil required for cultivation resulted in a reduction in the average value of the volumetric heat capacity of about 22%; an increase of approximately 5% in the average volumetric heat capacity and a 26% increase in the thermal diffusivity of the soil, as well as a reduction of approximately 50% in the heat flux from the surface of the soil.

O presente trabalho objetivou comparar o fluxo de calor sensível obtido pelo método do balanço de energia-razão de Bowen (H_B) e pelo método aerodinâmico (H_A), em uma área de 4 ha cultivada com feijão-caupi em Areia-PB (6º 58' 12" S e 35º 42' 15" O, 620 m). Foram coletados dados de saldo de radiação, fluxo de calor no solo, temperatura e umidade do solo, temperatura e umidade relativa do ar, velocidade do vento e precipitação pluvial, os quais eram lidos a cada minuto, e armazenados, em uma central de aquisição de dados, como médias a cada 30 min, com exceção da pluviometria, cujo valor foi totalizado no período. Obteve-se excelente concordância entre H_A e H_B, com um índice "d " de 0,980, um erro padrão (EP) de 14,88 W m-2, e sem diferença significativa entre H_A e H_B, pelo teste t-Student. Deste modo, o método aerodinâmico pode ser usado em conjunto com medidas de saldo de radiação e de fluxo de calor no solo, para se estimar o fluxo de calor latente e, consequentemente, a evapotranspiração da cultura do feijão-caupi, para as condições edafoclimáticas do Brejo Paraibano.

A study was performed to compare the bulk aerodynamic (H_A) and Bowen ratio energy balance (H_B) methods in the estimation of the sensible heat flux in a cowpea crop. Data of net radiation, soil heat flux, soil water content, soil temperature, air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and rainfall were collected on 30-min time intervals in an area of 4 ha belonging to the municipality of Areia, PB (6º 58' 12" S e 35º 42' 15" W, 620 m). Results showed that there was a good agreement between H_A and H_B with an index "d" of 0.98 and standard error of estimate (SEE) of 14.88 W m-2, no significant difference between H_A H_B, by the t-Student test. Thus, the bulk aerodynamic method can be used in conjunction with measurements of net radiation and soil heat flux to estimate the evapotranspiration of the cowpea under soil and climatic condition of the "Brejo Paraibano".

Os componentes do balanço de energia num solo cultivado com feijão caupi nas condições do Brejo Paraibano, foram determinados numa área de 4 ha do Centro de Ciências Agrárias, da UFPB, localizada no município de Areia, PB (6o 58' S, 35o 41' W e 620 m). Para tal, instalou-se uma torre no centro da área, contendo um pluviógrafo, um piranômetro, um saldo radiômetro e sensores para medida da temperatura e da umidade relativa do ar, em dois níveis acima do dossel da cultura; além disso, dois locais no solo foram instrumentados, cada um com duas sondas térmicas instaladas horizontalmente, nas profundidades de z1 = 2,0 cm e z2 = 8,0 cm, além de uma placa destinada à medida do fluxo de calor no solo, a 5,0 cm. Essas medidas foram armazenadas a cada 30 min, num sistema de aquisição de dados. Verificou-se que o valor médio do saldo de radiação (Rn) foi de 78%, sendo a Rn utilizada, em média, como 71% no fluxo de calor latente (LE), 19% como fluxo de calor sensível (H) e 10% como fluxo de calor no solo (G). A fração do saldo de radiação utilizada como fluxo de calor latente aumentou com a evolução da cobertura do solo pela cultura, enquanto a fração utilizada como fluxo de calor sensível e de calor no solo, diminuiu.

The energy balance components in a cowpea crop growing in the mountain region of Paraiba, Brazil ("Brejo Paraibano") was determined in a 4 ha area in the Centro de Ciências Agrárias, UFPB, in the municipality of Areia, PB (6o 58' S, 35o 41' W e 620 m). Measurements of rainfall, net and global radiation were made. Sensors at two levels above the canopy were also mounted, allowing the measurements of air temperature and relative humidity. Below the soil surface, two different sites were provided with two thermal probes, horizontally installed at depths of 2.0 and 8.0 cm, besides a heat flux plate 5.0 cm deep for soil heat flux measurements. All data were stored in a datalogger each 30 min. The average value of the net radiation was 78% of the global solar radiation, in which 71% appeared as latent heat flux, 19% as sensible heat flux and 10% as soil heat flux. The fractional content of the latent heat flux in the net radiation increased as the soil covered by the crop increased, while the two other components decreased.
